Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar was established in January 1997 for advancement of technical education & development. The University has under its affiliation 71 Engineering & Architect, 117 Management & Hotel Management and 32 Pharmacy colleges. Punjab as been one of the most prosperous state in India ever since Independence by way of green and white revolution, however, this achievement was washed over due to insufficient and affordable technical manpower and absence of innovative upgradation in technologies the industries of the State logged behind as compared to other States like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

To address this issue of Technical Manpower shortage and to usher into a new era of Industrial Development comparable to International Standards, the Punjab Government constituted Punjab Technical University (PTU) in 1997. The University was entrusted with the responsibility of developing the new generation of technical manpower that can spearhead the industrial development of the State. Punjab Technical University has been formed to be the grooming ground for the future Engineers, Managers and Researches.

As of today, PTU affiliates about 220 Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Architecture colleges in the State that are approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
